Expert discusses trauma of sexual harassment

"I have so much admiration for any victim who actually comes forward. They're not wrong," Lucy Berliner says.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 1 in 20 women and men (5.6 percent and 5.3 percent, respectively) experienced sexual violence other than rape in a nationally represented survey of adults.

Lucy Berliner, director of the Harborview Center for Sexual Assault and Traumatic Stress, discusses this issue prominent in the news. Her activities include clinical practice with child and adult victims of trauma and crime, research on the impact of trauma, and the effectiveness of clinical and societal interventions.

"When you get into situations that involve a high-profile public figure, were any of the women ... wrong to think, 'If I come forward, I could be blamed, I could be called a liar, I could be accused of having ulterior motives'?  That's really actually what happens," she says.
