During the holiday season, many of us focus on family, celebration and festive traditions. The holidays, unfortunately, can be a time of heightened risks, as well.

It's common for people to experience exacerbations of existing health issues during this season, said Dr. Arvin Akhavan, a UW Medicine emergency medicine physician at Harborview Medical Center. "We often see patients come in with worsening conditions," he said.

Increased alcohol consumption and cold weather contribute to injuries and emergencies that bring people to the hospital, he said. "We like to always caution people against drinking and driving, overdoing it, even though I know it's a time to celebrate."

If you're feeling unwell, Akhavan added, don't wait until after the holidays to seek medical attention. Staying vigilant and proactive about your health is the best way to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday season.
