Successful first year of Hep C organ transplants
"We see patients who have received and are doing well after an organ transplant who might not have lived ... if we had not had this program in place," says Dr. Ajit Limaye. His team oversees UW Medicine's fledgling program that enables transplant candidates to opt to receive organs infected with hepatitis C virus. Then, when a matching donor is found, the patient receives a transplant followed by a two-month regimen of daily medication to cure the hepatitis.
