Soundbites: Trauma unit employs lifesaving machine
The Seattle Times recently chronicled lifesaving measures provided to two patients at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. The patients likely would have died, doctors say, without the use of an ECMO -- extracorporeal membrane oxygenation -- machine that reoxygenates and warms blood, then sends it back into the patient.
Dr. Eileen Bulger, trauma chief at Harborview, explains in a brief video how the ECMO machine works and its value to patients who have few other options for survival.
