New test will aid in malaria research
For more than 100 years, researchers have been looking at blood smears through a microscope to diagnose malaria. A new biomarker test for malaria infection, developed by UW Medicine reseachers and their colleagues, has now been qualified by the FDA for use in certain types of clinical trials.
Sean Murphy, associate professor of laboratory medicine, explains how the biomarker outperforms the older test and detects blood infections sooner, and what this means for human studies of new drug and vaccine candidates against malaria.
