This summer, travel writer and TV host Rick Steves, 69, went in for a routine doctor’s visit, which led to a prostate cancer diagnosis. A blood test revealed his PSA level was 55, dangerously high and far above the normal level of 4 for his age.
Steves underwent robotic prostate surgery in September at the University of Washington Medical Center – Montlake. He has shared his patient journey with fans through social media. He expressed gratitude for the advances in robotic surgery that minimized his recovery time and his care at UW Medical Center and Fred Hutch.
Steves said he hopes his openness about his health challenge will encourage other men to get screened for prostate and other cancers, and to prioritize their health.
