Breast cancer vaccine trial recruiting new patients

A vaccine designed to battle breast cancer is moving to a randomized, Phase II clinical trial after an initial study showed it was safe and effective at targeting HER-2 positive cancers.

Anita Triolo participated in the Phase I study of the vaccine. She was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 42 in 2005.

"It's given me I think it's going on 17 years now [in remission]. So, it's given me a lot of extra time with my family," said Triolo. 

"I have very high hopes that it is close to the final step of this vaccine potentially becoming a treatment for patients with breast cancer," said lead author Dr. Mary "Nora" L. Disis, who's a professor of medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine.
