Family doctor named National Academy of Medicine fellow
The fellowship will enable Dr. Sebastian Tong to advance his talents as a health policy leader.Dr. Sebastian T. Tong, a UW Medicine family physician, addiction medicine specialist and health services researcher, has been selected as one of six 2023 National Academy of Medicine fellows. He will receive a James C. Puffer M.D./American Board of Family Medicine Fellowship.
The fellowships are based on professional qualifications and accomplishments, scholarly reputation, and the relevance of the awardee’s expertise to the work of the National Academy of Medicine and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.
Tong serves as an assistant professor of family medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine and practices primary care, including pregnancy care and addiction medicine, at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
Tong studies the implementation of, and access to, evidence-based practices in primary care. He is the associate director of the WWAMI Region Practice and Research Network in the five states of Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho. His research interests include integrated behavioral health, chronic pain, substance-use disorder and loneliness.
Tong graduated from Boston University School of Medicine and the Harvard School of Public Health before completing his residency at Lawrence Family Medicine Residency in Massachusetts, a program that trains physicians to work with underserved and vulnerable communities.
During his two-year National Academy of Medicine fellowship, he will collaborate with eminent U.S. researchers, policy experts and clinicians. He will also participate in academy initiatives to provide nonpartisan, scientific and evidence-based guidance to national, state and local policymakers, academic leaders, hospital administrators and the public.
The National Academy of Medicine, founded in 1970, is an independent organization chartered to advise the nation on medical and health issues.
