3 schools join Dentistry in new training for kids' care

Early Childhood Oral Health will include Pharmacy, Medicine, and Public Health students.

An ambitious new program focused on pediatric oral health training will involve practitioners and students in several schools at the University of Washington and external partners including Eastern Washington University.

A $1.5 million federal grant will establish the Early Childhood Oral Health Training, or EchoTrain, to improve access to dental care for children from birth to age 5.

The program hopes to address the shortfall of pediatric dentists across Washington -- a situation that is especially acute in rural areas. What's more, not all general dentists are comfortable treating young children.
