Washington state declares hepatitis A outbreak

As hepatitis A outbreaks are declared across the nation, including here in Washington state, what can you do to prevent infection?  A vaccine is one of the most effective ways. Hepatitis A is a highly contagious liver infection, transmitted primarily through oral contact with feces. People with poor access to sanitary facilities are at greater risk.

Dr. John Lynch, medical director of infection control at Harborview Medical Center, says the hospital is now vaccinating homeless and highly vulnerable community members when they come into the emergency department.
