The lifesaving power of early colon cancer screening

1 in 3 adults still misses recommended tests starting at age 45, even though colorectal cancer is most treatable when detected early.

Colorectal cancer — which affects the colon or rectum in the digestive tract — is now the leading cause of cancer death in people under 50. Concern about increasing colorectal cancer rates in younger people led the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force to change its colorectal cancer screening recommendations in 2021 to advise screening at a younger age. 

Dr. Rachel Issaka, a gastroenterologist and director of the Population Health Colorectal Cancer Screening Program at UW Medicine and Fred Hutch Cancer Center, wants people to understand how tests and early intervention can prevent colorectal cancer deaths in all ages.
