With sunglasses, form should follow function

When it comes to sunglasses, who doesn't want to look cool? But look for ones that will protect your eyes from cataracts, macular degeneration, and other vision diseases.

Ashley McCain, an optometrist with the Karalis Johnson Retina Center at UW Medicine, explains how to look for sunglasses that protect from the sun's ultraviolet rays --  a must-have when sunglasses-shopping. There are also different types, tints, and shapes of frames and lenses that, depending on your activity, could be relatively more functional.

For more on why sunglasses are so important, the National Eye Institute has a fact sheet.
