Study examines ERPO filings in Washington state
The first study examining Washington state's use of ERPOs, or extreme risk protection orders, was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. ERPOs allow family, household members, and law enforcement officers to petition a judge to temporarily restrict access to firearms if someone appears at substantial risk of harming themselves or others.
The study examined characteristics of the respondents and the circumstances behind the filings. Dr. Ali Rowhani-Rahbar, co-director of the Firearm Injury and Policy Research Program and Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center, explains the findings in the video below.
