Soundbites: Malaria vaccine study with Sean Murphy

Sean Murphy, a physician and scientist at the University of Washington Department of Laboratory Medicine, explains the latest efforts in his lab to develop a malaria vaccine.  In mice studies, his team is harnessing T cells to fight malaria in the liver, where it first appears after entering the body through an infected mosquito bite.  The goal is to ward off the parasite in the seven or so days before it leaves the liver to enter red blood cells.  The approach is called "prime and trap."   Other infectious diseases that affect particular organs might also be prevented someday through tissue-specific immunity approaches to vaccines.
