Safe inside and out: eliminating worry over window falls

Opening a window can feel like a necessity to keep your family cool during a hot summer day, but it’s often a formula for danger in the Pacific Northwest.

In the past few weeks, Harborview Medical Center has treated five children for injuries sustained from window falls. One of those children died. Every year, the hospital treats about 50 kids after such falls.

As a trauma pediatrician at Harborview, Dr. Beth Ebel treats many of these children.

“This is critical safety issue for kids, and it's one of the most dangerous things that we see for kids,” Ebel says “For all of us at the trauma center, this window-fall tragedy is overwhelming when the weather gets nice here.”
