A new UW Medicine video aims to teach first responders and fellow riders how to safely handle equestrian accidents, whether in an arena or out on the trail. The project, led by Dr. Cindy Lin of the UW Medicine Sports Institute, highlights the unique risks of horseback riding. Featuring real-life scenarios and expert guidance from EMTs and Airlift Northwest, the video demonstrates best practices for approaching injured riders and calming horses at chaotic scenes. Former patient and Ellensburg trainer Mitch Williams hopes the program will help prevent future tragedies.

“Equestrian sports are a high-risk sport,” Lin said. “Every second can count. And so that's why it's so important that we educate the public about how to respond if you suspect a serious injury.”
