The Seattle Hub for Synthetic Biology officially launched today as a collaboration involving the Allen Institute, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and the University of Washington.

“What we are trying to do is to develop an approach that allows cells to basically record what is happening to them in real time. “We're essentially trying to encode something analogous to a smartwatch inside of a cell,” said Dr. Jay Shendure, professor of genome sciences at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He is the executive director of the Seattle Hub for Synthetic Biology.
