Parents warn of window falls during warm weather
Opening your home's windows on a hot day can keep your living space cool, but there's a hidden peril for young children. Every year, Harborview Medical Center treats about 50 kids who tumble out of windows. That's what happened to nearly 18-month-old Lily Weaver in late June. Thankfully she's OK, but her parents are sharing the experience because they had never considered the danger until they went through this nightmare.
Dr. Beth Ebel, a UW Medicine pediatrician and researcher at Harborview's Injury Prevention and Research Center, says window screens give a false sense of security. She suggests specific ways that parents can safeguard their homes to reduce the chance of window falls.
