New guidance emerges for care of type 1 diabetes and heart disease

There are almost no scientific studies of type 1 diabetes, leaving doctors without a clear understanding of how to treat the disease.

This week, endocrinologists, including Dr. Irl Hirsch of the University of Washington School of Medicine, have published a guide n the New England Journal of Medicine. It's meant to help primary-care physicians, who treat about 50% of diabetes 1 patients.
