New brain health institute means hope
UW Medicine is creating the Garvey Institute for Brain Health Solutions to develop effective new treatments for brain disorders, with foundational funding of $50 million from philanthropists Lynn and Mike Garvey.
Dr. Jürgen Unützer, professor and chair of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Washington School of Medicine, discusses the institute's benefits for the community and for patients' well-being. "I’m going to say to them it means hope," Unützer says. "It gives me hope that someday I’ll have better treatments for you – and it also gives me hope that when we have new treatments, we won’t take a decade to get them out into practice, so people like you and your families can benefit much more quickly."
