For almost two decades, the Nick of Time Foundation has conducted advanced heart screens for teens in western Washington. The foundation held its 100th event on Jan. 8 at Seattle’s Ballard High School.

The event was organized by Ballard student Eli Pitcock and his friends, Kaia Hofsass, Bianca Maurer and Natalie Duggan. The foundation's executive director, Darla Varrenti, says the event is crucial in saving teenage lives.

UW Medicine sports medicine Dr. Jonathan Drezner, the foundation’s medical director, comments on his experience with these screenings of young students. Drezner directs the UW Medicine Center for Sports Cardiology and is a team physician at the University of Washington.
