'Drop the Knee' a way to 'Stop the Bleed'?
It's an unusual approach, but one that Nathan White, an emergency medicine physician at Harborview Medical Center, thinks can make a difference when it comes to trauma. White was practicing Brazilian jiu-jitsu one day when they worked on a technique called "knee ride" or "knee mount." This pinning move exerts a lot of pressure and White thought it could be adapted for use by bystanders to stop bleeding from a severe injury.
He and two University of Washington undergraduate students, John Slevin and Cierra Harrison, ran a pilot study and found that the move did decrease blood flow in major limb arteries. Hear more from White in the video below and learn more in the related news release.
