Can pregnant individuals get the COVID-19 vaccine?

Is it safe for pregnant people to get the COVID-19 vaccine? As of right now, Dr. Linda Eckert, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at University of Washington School of Medicine, says it's an individual choice and people should speak with their care provider. But, she also warns that COVID is far more dangerous to people who are pregnant.

"They have an increased risk of ending up in the intensive care unit. They have an increased risk of needing intubation. And you have to weigh that risk and your risk of acquiring COVID versus the potential theoretic risk of a vaccine," she says.

UW Medicine also set up a registry for pregnant individuals who did get the vaccine to sign up if they decide to, so researchers can follow up and get more data. For more information, see our related blog post.
