The fledgling group of drugs known as "GLP-1s" are giving many people a new opportunity to reclaim a healthy sensibility toward life.
In a Q&A, Dr. David Cummings, an endocrinologist at the University of Washington School of Medicine and the VA Puget Sound, discussed the growing evidence for their use.
"I've had a long experience with transforming people's lives by getting them to bariatric surgery, what we call metabolic surgery. Typically if a person is 300 pounds, they'll drop to be 200 pounds. That utterly transforms their lives. So, I'm used to that, but we never had that with medicines till now," Cummings said.
