UW Medicine is helping to conduct a clinical trial to explore an investigational therapy for people diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Adults ages 18 to 35 with a recent diagnosis are prospective candidates to test a drug designed to protect the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.

“They come in and we screen them to make sure they are still making some of their own insulin, and if they are and they don't have any other medical problems, they can then come into the study,” said Dr. Irl Hirsch, the endocrinologist leading UW Medicine's trial site.

By preserving the body’s ability to make its own insulin, the investigational therapy, which is delivered via IV, might reduce long-term effects of the disease, Hirsch said.
