Kids walk to school? Help them get there safely

Randy Carnell
A young woman uses a crosswalk as an SUV approaches.
Crossing the street is easy, right? Yet pedestrians are struck by cars every day in America, and many of those events could be avoided.
As school begins, Dr. Beth Ebel suggests that parents whose children walk to school take time for a conversation about traveling safely. Talk about the child's route, where they choose to cross, and the preventable risk of cell-phone use.
Most kids, she says, don't consistently practice safety habits until they're around 11 years old, so your child's maturity is worth considering.
