In what is being called the first-ever test of open-source drug-discovery, researchers from around the world have successfully identified compounds to pursue in treating and preventing parasite-borne illnesses such as malaria as well as cancer.

A class of white cells that has long been thought to play a relatively minor role in the body’s defenses against malaria infection may, in fact, be a potent weapon against the malaria parasite.

April 25 is World Malaria Day. Last year, 97 countries and territories reported transmission of the disease, represented by 207 million cases, according to the World Health Organization.
