In order to fit within the nucleus of a cell, the human genome must bend, fold and coil into an unimaginably compact shape – and still function.

By studying the varied finches and tortoises of the Galapagos Islands in the 1800s, Charles Darwin realized that populations split by geographic boundaries, such as the sea, diverge as they experience different conditions.

A low-cost technology may make it possible to read long sequences of DNA far more quickly than current techniques.
