Study of antibiotic therapy for appendicitis to start in May

Patient recruitment nears in test of alternative treatment to surgery

For more than 130 years, surgery has been the standard approach to appendicitis. In May, UW Medical Center will start recruiting patient-subjects in a five-year study to determine whether antibiotic therapy might supplant surgery as the best treatment in cases of uncomplicated appendicitis.

The study is the first head-to-head trial in the U.S. to compare an alternative to appendectomy.
