Next-gen valve replacements expand heart patients’ options

People who cannot undergo surgery due to age or illness can now receive a lifesaving device via catheter

Technological leaps now enable older and sicker patients to receive a replacement heart valve without open surgery. The newest generation of replacement valves are akin to miniature umbrellas, and are threaded into place via catheter.

“I think the future is that everyone who needs a valve will get a transcatheter valve,” said Dr. Catherine M. Otto, a cardiologist at the UW Medicine Regional Heart Center.
