Growing resistance to vaccines makes populace more vulnerable

Protection of 'herd immunity' eroded by trend

When too many healthy people opt out of immunizations, the whole population -- not just those who skipped shots -- becomes more vulnerable to disease. People who were previously protected may face disease strains for which they have no defense.

“We’ve reached a situation in parts of the country where we are well below high levels of vaccination [for measles],” said "Betz" Halloran, a professor of biostatistics at the University of Washington.
