Fast-food consumption by kids declined over 7-year span

Caloric intake at burger, pizza and chicken chains trended down

The number of U.S. kids eating fast food declined from 2003 to 2010, and the calories from some types of fast foods have been reduced as well, according to a new study from the University of Washington.

Consumers' increased awareness of nutrition and restaurants' recasting of menu items likely contributed to the trend, said the authors, Adam Drewnowski, UW professor of epidemiology, and Colin Rehm, formerly of the UW and now of Tufts University in Massachusetts.
