To fashion an ear: New 3-D model helps surgical trainees

UW teamwork yields low-cost base that resembles rib cartilage on which residents can practice

To shape an artificial ear, medical students practice with bars of soaps, potatoes and apples to hone their techniques. A collaboration between a UW Medicine surgical resident and a UW bioengineering student recently yielded a more realistic model. With 3-D printing, they've developed a low-cost, more lifelike base on which they can practice ear reconstruction.
