Dentistry students take contest down to the wire

Decades-old challenge involves creating sculptures of orthodontic materials

With an intricately woven wire tree adorned with a swing and a bench, Dr. Niousha Saghafi won the annual Department of Orthodontics wire sculpture contest for first-year residents. The contest, first staged in 1966, requires participants to use orthodontic materials such as wire, rubber bands and acrylic, and their work is judged for esthetic quality, innovative design and technical competence.
