In the first week after Oregon Health Sciences University suspended its heart-transplantation program, eight of those patients were transferred to UW Medicine in Seattle.
"Our primary commitment is to patients ... and a state line doesn't mean we're any less committed to people who live in Oregon than who live in Washington," said Dr. Dan Fishbein, medical director of heart transplant at UW Medical Center. "We feel a great commitment to patients with advanced heart disease in the entire region."
Additional referrals may emerge, Fishbein added. He discusses the topic in this downloadable video segment.
