We've all seen it in the stores: Shelves where hand sanitizer used to be are now empty as people prepared for the coronavirus outbreak.  That demand increased among hospitals across the country, as well.

"We’re making it to supplement the supply we are able to get to make sure we have it available in the areas we need," said Michael Alwan, director of pharmacy at UW Medical Center.

The pharmacists are following the World Health Organization's recipe, which calls for three ingredients. If you can't find hand sanitizer in stores and want to make your own, just make sure the recipe and ingredients come from reputable sources. Of course, washing your hands frequently with soap and water is effective, too, infection-control experts say.
