Harborview Emergency Department helps voters register

Harborview Medical Center has set up a voter registration kiosk it its emergency department.  Harborview, located near downtown Seattle, has a mission to care for underserved and vulnerable communities and those patient populations often show up in the emergency department. Dr. Herbie Duber, an emergency medicine physician at Harborview, explains why his department is making it easier for their patients to register to vote.

He says, “The idea is that we want to give everyone a voice, particularly those who may not have a voice and by getting people registered to vote, that’s another way of doing that.”.

"Harborview’s mission is around underserved populations, around immigrant populations in addition to providing the high quality of care we provide for trauma, burns and other key things that we do," he says. "While this may seem separate it really is in line with Harborview’s core mission."
