Doctors discuss prospective vaccine law change

Measles vaccine legislation is now on Gov. Jay Inslee's desk. He has expressed support for limiting exemptions such as the one in the bill, which would eliminate Washington state parents' ability to claim a personal belief exemption to avoid having their children immunized against measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR). Religious and medical exemptions would remain.

Dr. Beth Ebel, pediatrician at Harborview Medical Center, explains what she's heard from parents and how this will keep children safe. Dr. John Lynch, medical director of infection control at Harborview, explains who, beyond children, should consider getting a MMR vaccine, and how immunizations protect people who cannot get vaccinated, such as those with compromised immune systems.
