Your compliant-patient selfie

A UW Medicine researcher tests whether a smartphone can help patients remember to take medications.

Researchers are testing a smartphone application in which patients are asked to supply video of themselves taking their medication. The group of patient subjects all are undergoing treatment for opioid-use disorder, which involves taking the drug buprenorphine.

Lack of adherence to pill-taking regimens is a problem with this population, and a missed dose can increase risk for relapse.  The thought is that a phone app could improve compliance among patients.

Dr. Judith Tsui, an internist at UW Medicine/Harborview, is co-lead author of the study.
