Dr. Ben Starnes meets Fred Crowe this summer in Annapolis, Maryland.
For years Ben Starnes, a UW Medicine vascular surgeon at Harborview Medical Center, wondered what had happened to the stranger whom his father had helped in a moment of need in 1967.
The man, Fred Crowe, had later been deployed to Vietnam and was imprisoned for six years before being freed. Starnes tracked down Crowe via the Internet and the two met this past summer. Crowe, now 93, said that the random act of kindness in 1967 became a sustaining memory during his years as a prisoner of war.
KING-TV's Alex Rozier tells the compelling story.
