Type 1 diabetes: a tricky diagnosis

March 8, 2018

The disease can emerge at any age, and thousands of people are misdiagnosed with Type 2 when they actually have Type 1.

Dr. Irl Hirsch, a professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine, has described the misdiagnosis of adult-onset type 1 diabetes as an “epidemic.”  He blames physicians' lack of awareness and medical training as the reason for so many misdiagnoses.

And, he said, accompanying frustration stems from the fact that a simple blood test can detect antibodies associated with type 1 diabetes.
