Rodeo star had CTE, brain specialists say

October 11, 2017

Ty Pozzobon died of suicide, and his parents asked UW Medicine brain specialists to render an opinion.

After Ty Pozzobon died at age 25, his family said they suspected his death was related to repeated concussions sustained during his rodeo career. The family transported his brain to Seattle, and UW Medicine neuropathologists Christine MacDonald and Dirk Keene concluded that Pozzobon had chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE.

Moreover, "it is repeatedly reported that there are increased incidents of mental health symptoms and psychiatric diagnosis following traumatic brain injury," said Dr. Christine MacDonald, an associate professor of neurological surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine.
