Resistant Yaws emerges; Repeated mass treatments urged

February 21, 2018

Reuters interviews Dr. Sheila Lukehart, whose lab at Harborview Medical Center processed samples cited in The Lancet.

The WHO strategy of a single mass treatment with azithromycin did not eradicate yaws, and resistant strains have emerged, international researchers say. They urge repeated mass treatments to eliminate the infectious disease.

The current study by Dr. Lukehart and colleagues extends the follow-up of their pilot in a Papua New Guinea island from 12 months to 42 months, with clinical, serological and PCR (polymerase chain reaction) survey monitoring every six months.
