Op-ed: Keep the Special Olympics' ideal alive

July 9, 2018

Local businesses should increase opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

A Seattle Times op-ed expresses hope that the just-ended Special Olympics could leave a legacy of inclusion in Seattle -- if local businesses recognize and respond to the opportunity.

"This is more than creating a “day” or a week when people with disabilities are welcomed. It’s about making that commitment 365 days a year — inviting people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities to live, learn, work and play in their neighborhoods and local businesses," the two co-authors write.

The editorial was written by Stacy Gillett, executive director of The Arc of King County, and. Gary Stobbe, clinical associate professor of neurolog at the University of Washington School of Medicine, and director of the UW Medicine Adult Autism Clinic.
