Dr. Louis Kim notes the blocked blood vessels in McNeely’s brain, left, and the restored flow after surgery, right.
Sue McNeely of Bothell, Washington, hasn't driven since February 10, when she had a stroke in rush-hour traffic on Interstate 405.
A state trooper responded and recognized the emergency. McNeely was taken to Harborview Medical Center, which has the state's only comprehensive stroke center.
Chief of Neurological Surgery Dr. Louis Kim performed a procedure to remove a blood clot blocking blood flow to the part of her brain that controls strength and movement on the left side of her body. "It can immediately take a patient with acute stroke, like Mrs. McNeely and restore them to normal blood flow and normal function again, in just moments," he said.
