In New Mobility: Life Beyond Wheels, writer Ian Ruder chronicles the rise to fame of Portugal. The Man and Eric Howk, the band's guitarist. Howk had been considering joining the band in 2007, when a wall collapsed underneath him and he suffered a T4 spinal cord injury. But the accident didn't put the plans on hold for long .The band brought the recording studio to Howk at Harborview Medical Center while he was in rehab.
